Freelancing. Sleep in as long as you want, take a day off when you need. Never have to get out of your PJ’s. Never have to leave the house. Heaven, right?
Actually, for a lot of people the idea of ‘homework’ is strictly for your high school years. I have to agree with them. Don’t get me wrong, while working in full-time positions I have certainly squeezed the most out of every single lazy annual leave day, moping around on my couch, but day in day out it can get a bit tedious. The bed sores and ‘hermit’ symptoms finally dragged me out from under my covers and into Framework Melbourne, one of Melbourne’s newest coworking spaces.
If you aren’t familiar, coworking spaces are essentially open plan office/studio spaces where freelancers and small businesses can rent a desk. Here you get all the amenities, the professional address, a good place to meet clients and perhaps most importantly you are able to network with likeminded individuals. In the creative industries in particular, networking and word of mouth is a very major part of any success and most coworkers generate enough work to cover their desk lease simply through the people they meet at the space.
Melbourne has a hefty list of coworking spaces already. Let’s face it, we are that kind of city. I was lucky enough to get involved with Framework from the very beginning (hell, I might even be the person that answers the phone if you call) and it’s the right side of the city, the right size and has the exact amount of pool table, xbox and basketball ring I’m looking for.
